Defensive Dining – GF at a Glance – San Antonio – Aldaco’s Stone Oak Mexican Cuisine

Blanca Aldaco is still a celiac’s best friend, but she has pulled up stakes and migrated to the far north part of San Antonio, where Aldaco’s sits at the top of the highest hill in Stone Oak. The view from this location is panoramic. Blanca has moved her staff and attention to detail out to this new location. Fortunately for us, she brought her dedicated gluten-free fryer to ensure all the corn tortilla chips are gluten free!

All items are made from scratch from fresh ingredients, are authentic Mexican, and indescribably delicious. A few favorites include Caldo Tlalpeno (soup), Caldito de Pollo (soup), Chicken or Shrimp Fajitas, Vegetable Relleno, with or without shrimp, Guacamole Salad, rice, borracho beans, and corn tortillas.

The celiac menu lists the allowed entrées at the top, and then down below it advises you about the prohibited items. It is not easy to tell from looking at the plate set in front of you, so be sure you ask for a waiter who is familiar with the celiac menu.

Aldaco’s serves Redbridge Beer, along with a selection of tequila drinks that are gluten free. When you go in, ask if Blanca is there and ask for the gluten-free menu. It is always good to let Blanca or a manager know that you are going to be ordering from the celiac menu. (AB January 2009)
